How Sliding Barn Doors, Pocket Doors, and French Doors Can Become Features
Though doors might often be considered almost as an afterthought, they can actually be one more way to add some visual interest to your custom home design. By forgoing traditional panel doors in favor of sliding barn doors, pocket doors, or even French doors, those basic entryways can really bring an unexpected wow-factor, granting entree to style that reflects just how truly special your home is.
Pocket doors were once a common element in homes; but as time went on, they became a forgotten trend. It’s a feature coming back into use, however, as pocket doors are a great way to close off a space; and because they slide into a pocketed wall to hide away from view, they don’t take up much visual or physical space.
Get Your Slide On
Much like pocket doors, sliding barn doors are a unique way to close-off a room or other doored opening like a closet without the demand of clearance for a door to swing in or out, which makes them an even greater idea for areas where you might lack extra space. Because they slide along a steel frame above the doorway, they act much as a pocket door would, though they are much easier to install and won’t require the extra construction that would be necessary for a pocket door. Style wise, the possibilities for sliding barn doors are almost endless. Consider going literal and using recycled barn doors to add some rustic flair; refinish reclaimed doors from other homes or buildings that have been demolished to bring in some character; or mount up some painted paneling and make a mural.
French doors aren’t only for exterior use anymore, though using French doors rather than sliding glass doors to give outdoor access is certainly an idea worth considering. On the whole, they look more elegant that standard sliders or traditional single doors…which makes them pretty perfect for other places, as well, especially if you like the look of a grand entry. True, the side-by-side style requires a bit more wall space, but it’s a dramatic touch that can really define a room, whether that’s your grand master suite or a separate dining room. Think of the possibilities, and you may well find yourself wanting to speak French.
