Stucco Contractor: EIFS Damage Repair
If you’re like most people, you don’t know that there are actually several types of stucco, one of which is synthetic stucco or EIFS, which stands for Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems.
The Sticking Point
Because it is installed in multiple layers, EIFS is quite similar to traditional stucco, which begins its life as a powdered substance that is combined with water before being layered onto a wall. Unlike traditional stucco, however, EIFS is applied in three very independent steps, beginning first with the installation of a layer of foam insulation to the home’s exterior. Next comes a layer of coating that consists of polymer and cement reinforced with fiberglass mesh; and once that coating has set, the third and last layer is applied in a textured finishing coat.
Water Is a Rotter
While both types of stucco are similar in appearance, EIFS is softer and more flexible than traditional stucco, and homes clad in EIFS have the disadvantage of being prone to retaining moisture between the sheathing layer of the home and the EIFS. If water intrudes into those layers, it will be unable to drain, which may eventually cause rotting. In areas of the country where moisture levels are high, EIFS can sustain a great amount of damage, which means that if your home is clad in EIFS, you’ll need to find a custom home builder; a home remodeling contractor; or, ideally, a stucco contractor who specializes in EIFS damage repair. They’ll be better able to handle the repairs properly, so that future problems can be prevented, and they may even be able to point out areas that have been compromised and will need more major repair if they’re not properly addressed now.
Any type of damage to your home can be stressful, but if the repairs are done correctly, it’s something that can give you peace of mind that’s well worth the cost. Your home is an investment, and that investment should be protected and cared for. Do your due diligence as a homeowner and research the companies in your area so that you know your home is in the best hands and that the quality of the work being done is the very best available.
